Fort Amherst is Britain's best surviving example of a Napoleonic Fortress and is of international historical importance.
A fine Napoleonic fort, currently under restoration, with 14 acres of batteries, bastions and tunnels, a working gun battery and a variety of other displays. There is a visitor centre and various events take place throughout the year.
Its principle purpose was to protect the former Royal Dockyard at Chatham from a land based attack. The original defences, over 3 kilometres in length, totally enclosed the Dockyard and the village of Brompton.
Today Fort Amherst still has an important role to play as it forms a major part of Chatham's bid for World Heritage Site status.
Whilst the parkland grounds of Fort Amherst are open free of charge daily, a charge applies for tunnel tours.
