Built to the design of John Adam in 1758 for a dashing young Scottish laird, Patrick Home of Billie, Paxton House is one of the finest 18th century Palladian country houses in Britain boasting interiors by Robert Adam and the pre-eminent collection of furniture in Scotland by Chippendale and William Trotter.
The magnificently restored regency Picture Gallery, the largest in a Scottish Country House, exhibits over 70 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland and focuses on British Art from 1760 to 1840, the hey day of Paxton House itself. Here you will see masterpieces by Raeburn, Wilkie and Lawrence alongside many works of local interest such as Sam Bough's Berwick upon Tweed and the Rev John Thomson's Fast Castle. The fully restored working Georgian kitchen is complete with active charcoal stoves and baking oven.
