The Museum is housed within a converted 16th century cloth merchant’s house with modern extensions and a reconstructed barn. The main phase of the museum’s refurbishment was completed in July 1999. An interactive auditorium presents the history of the Vale and Downland area. Special collections from across the Vale, many on show for the first time, display the story of Wantage and the rural life of its surrounding countryside. Life at the end of the 20th century is not forgotten, with a display featuring a Williams Formula 1 racing car. There are many hands-on activities, special events and temporary exhibitions. As a guide to planning your day, you should allow at least one hour to see the galleries, audio-visual presentation and exhibition space. The exhibits are aimed at a wide age range and there are activities for children from four years of age. Changing facilities are available for our youngest visitors. The museum provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors of all ages. It is run by a
combination of professional staff and volunteers, all aiming to make your visit a memorable one.
