About Bolling Hall

It's easy to see why Bolling Hall was a pleasant family home for more than five centuries, with views right over the city towards the open hills and moors beyond. The oldest part has been standing since well before Henry VIII came to the throne, and the most recent alterations are now more than two hundred years old!
Only a rich man could own a house of this size but the people who lived here were never particularly grand or fashionable. They don't seem to have been very lucky, either; one owner lost the lands because he picked the wrong rose in the Wars of the Roses, another because he picked the wrong side in the Civil War a century later.
The Hall was always a living home. Today it is furnished to give an idea of what it might have been like at various times during its long history. As you stroll around it's easy to imagine fifteenth and sixteenth century ladies sitting quietly at their embroidery, seventeenth century cooks perspiring over a blazing fire in the huge kitchen fireplace or eighteenth century gentlemen entertaining their friends with tales of all the problems they encountered in redecorating their fine suite of reception rooms, for each part of the house is furnished to match with its main period.
