About Broubster Leans Nature Reserve

Lying seven miles south-west of Thurso, Broubster Leans is a diverse mosaic of wet grassland, pools, channels and rush pasture, nestled in farmland, making it an ideal place for wildlife. Its high value for nature is reflected in the many designations the site carries (Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Area and Special Conservation Area). Broubster Leans is one of the most important sites in northern Scotland for breeding waders and, in the winter, a refuge for Greenland white-fronted geese and whooper swans. Greenshanks, golden plovers and common sandpipers, hen harriers, twites and short-eared owls are all inhabitants of the Leans.
