Eileanan Dubha (the Black Islands) lies at the head of Loch Alsh between the west coast mainland and the Isle of Skye. A diverse but compact range of ungrazed habitats includes rocky shores, saltmarsh, tall herbaceous vegetation and developing scrub woodland. Black guillemot, shag, eider, herring gull, greylag goose, rock pipit, oystercatcher and great black-backed gull all breed here. Arctic and common terns breed some years. Cormorants are often present. Common seals and otter also breed on the islands.
