About Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre, Gallery and Museum

Faversham Museum, incorporating the Fleur de Lis Gallery, is housed in the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre in Preston Street and provides an insight into the history of Faversham.

It was re-opened in November 2002 after a complete refurbishment of the site and the provision of new facilities.

Museum

To enter the museum is to put today on hold and be absorbed into history! You will track the growth of Faversham from the early Iron Age settlements right up to the vast prosperity of Elizabethan times.

Then, perched on 100lb powder barrels, visitors can watch the audio-visual display and learn of the huge influence that the growth of the explosives industry had on the town - and the nation - for more than 400 years.

If you prefer a gentler view of the past, the Victorian schoolroom and fully equipped kitchen will fascinate, while there is a definite "Upstairs, Downstairs" element with the reminders of the town’s rich civic dignitaries.

Stroll on then to the street of shops, from the chemist to the sweet shop, the barber to the post office, all the windows recreate authentic displays and fittings.

The museum depicts the lives of our predecessors, what work did they do, how did they entertain themselves, what did they wear, what was important to them, how did they cope with two world wars … you may not find all the answers here, but the journey will be remarkable!
