The Guildhall is a half timbered house on the corner of the Greenmarket and Fisher Street. It was given to the city by Richard de Redeness and was long used as the meeting place of the town's eight medieval Trade Guilds. Four of the Guilds survive today and continue to meet annually in the building on Ascension Day.
The building is believed to date from the late 14th century. Its upper floors project out in the usual fashion of timber-framed structures. The building was extensively renovated in 1978-9, but much early timber-work survives, as do wattle-and-daub internal walls. The results of current research on the structure and dating of the building are awaited with interest. The Guildhall is a Grade 1 Ancient Monument, and one of the four oldest buildings in the City.
Open April to October, 7 days a week, 12noon-4.30pm.
