Lewes Brooks Nature Reserve is a new reserve, acquired in 2005, forms a large part of the Lewes Brooks Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A lowland wet grassland site, the reserve now supports several breeding pairs of lapwings (seven in 2010) and good numbers of wintering snipe.
There are 4 km of ditches, notable as the only known site in the UK for the Lewes water beetle, Laccophilus poecilus, last seen in 2002. A good variety of scarce water beetles, moths and nationally rare water snails have also been found in the ditches.
We are working to bring the SSSI into favourable condition through water level management, careful grazing, and by improving the water supply.
We hope to use the reserve as a base for working with neighbours and statutory agencies so as to enhance the wider SSSI, and by acquiring the reserve we have shown our commitment to the whole lower Ouse valley, which we think has huge potential for wildlife.
