The Lillie Art Gallery, located in Station Road adjacent to Milngavie Town Hall, is a purpose built gallery opened in 1962. It owes its existence to local banker and artist Robert Lillie (1867-1949), who left a substantial number of his own artworks as well as funds to build the gallery. Since 1962, this founding bequest of artworks has been developed to form a collection of Scottish art dating from the 1880s to the present day.
Around 450 works are contained in the collection, which includes paintings, prints, drawings and a small collection of sculpture and ceramics. Artists represented include several of the Glasgow Boys, the Scottish Colourists, Jessie King, Mary Armour, Alan Davie, Joan Eardley, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Margery Clinton, June Redpath and Adrian Wiszniewski.
The gallery mounts a lively temporary exhibitions programme, including thematic exhibitions drawn from the permanent collection, annual exhibitions by both Milngavie Art Club and Bearsden Art Club, exhibitions by contemporary Scottish artists and also touring exhibitions of both fine and applied art. Children's Saturday morning art classes are run during the winter and spring months and art activities are organised during the summer holidays and in relation to selected temporary exhibitions.
