The gardens are a designed landscape of the late 20th century. They straddle an old sea cliff which is broken by the gully of the Meikle burn with its waterfalls. The gully has been planted with many exotic Rhododendrons. The burn also provides water to the fountains in the lower garden with the surrounding planting of bog plants.
The gardens contain extensive collections of other temperate plants. Notable is the fern collection with many trunked specimens, the 'New Zealand heath' with spiny Aciphyllas and Celmisias, the carpets of wild garlic and bluebells in the more wooded areas and a bamboo garden with some three dozen species from four continents.
