About Mersehead Nature Reserve

The reserve is between the beautiful Solway coastline and rolling heather-clad hills. Discover the breathtaking scenery and wildlife that’s typical of this region. Stroll along the trails, discover the beach and use the viewing hides to explore at your own pace. The 3.2km (2 miles) Wetland trail leads you past hedgerows and through woodland to two viewing hides that overlook shallow pools and reed beds. The whole family can get involved completing the monthly wildlife challenge. The 4km (2.5 miles) Coastal trail explores the sandy shoreline and merse with stunning views across the Solway Firth and the Lakeland fells. It’s an exhilarating walk and children can take their finds back to the visitor centre for the driftwood shelves. Spring is magical when skylarks fill the air with song and natterjack toads call in a 'dusk chorus'. Summer is a great time to watch butterflies and dragonflies in the day and to try and spot the elusive badgers, roe deer and barn owls at night. In the autumn, thousands of Svalbard barnacle geese arrive, creating a not-to-be-missed spectacle.

Relax in the visitor centre with a drink and snack and watch birds on the feeders from the viewing room. Friendly staff and volunteers are on hand if you would like to find out more about the reserve, the RSPB or local area information. There are toilet facilities and a picnic area. The visitor centre is open from 10am-5pm February to October, 10am-4pm November to January. There are several events on throughout the year and activities for families and children during school holidays, please contact the reserve for more information.

The Visitor centre and Sulwath centre are both wheelchair and pushchair friendly and have disabled toilet facilities and a baby change area. The Wetland trail is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. Parts of the Coastal trail and access to the beach are not currently suitable for wheelchairs or buggies.
