St Anthony Head lies at the southernmost tip of the Roseland Peninsula, guarding the entrance to one of the world's great natural harbours, and offering commanding views of the Fal estuary.
You really are spoilt for choice here with two sandy beaches: Great Molunan and Little Molunan; fantastic walking along the South West Coast Path, and an abundance of wildlife.
Take a closer look at seabirds from the bird hide, including fulmars as they glide across the vertical rock faces. You may also spot shags congregating on the low rock near the lighthouse and grey seals on the rocks at the tide falls.
The lighthouse
St Anthony Lighthouse was built in 1834 by the chief engineer of Trinity House, James Walker, to warn ships of the hazardous Manacles rocks. You can now enjoy the far-reaching views from this prominent landmark with a stay in the old officer's quarters and workshops, now converted into hoilday cottages.
St Anthony's military history
St Anthony Head was always of strategic importance and had a gun battery from the early 19th century until 1957. By the entrance to the car park you'll see a small house that used to be the fort's guard room, and at one time the parking area was covered with concrete buildings and Nissen huts. These were taken down, but we refurbished the officers' quarters into holiday cottages named Major's, Captain's, Lieutenant's and Tiffy's. Beyond Tiffy's holiday cottage, which used to be the artillery workshop, are the gun emplacements. Use the toposcope nearby to identify the surrounding landscape features.
A working battery is mostly underground, and below the gun emplacements a door leads down to the magazine, which was the storage place for amunition. You'll also see the restored Battery Observation Post, built during the Second World War to identify any enemy ships.
St Anthony Head battery is open once a year, contact the National Trust for times.
