The Turnpike Gallery opened in 1971. It is a modern, large gallery (300sq. m) within the Turnpike Centre, a multi-functional building which also houses Leigh library. The building is located in the civic square, a focal point within the centre of the town. It is managed by Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust.
The gallery aims to show the best of contemporary art to the widest possible audience through exhibitions, learning and outreach. The exhibition programme consists of six/seven exhibitions per year, and aims to reflect the broad variety of current visual arts practice by regional, national and international artists. Each exhibition is accompanied by education events for the general public, schools and other groups, including artists talks and hands-on artist-led workshops.
