Vast area of open country from wild Wasdale to the River Duddon estuary. In Wasdale the Trust owns England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and deepest lake, Wastwater, which has impressive scree slopes. Almost the whole of the surrounding mountains are NT-owned, including Great Gable and the famous historic wall patterns at the valley head. Lower down the valley is the wooded and tranquil Nether Wasdale Estate.
