The Williamson’s annual exhibition programme includes the Wirral Spring Exhibition of Art & Photography, which is an open exhibition available to any artist or photographer with Wirral connections – if you were born or educated, live or work in Wirral, you are eligible to enter.
The prizes in the Art section are purchase prizes, the winners are purchased and enter the Wirral Museums collection. The Photographic section is supported by Birkenhead Photographic Association who award a small cash First Prize themselves.
The Wirral Spring usually opens shortly after Easter each year.
This is followed by the Wirral Art School Degree Show, final year students from the BA Fine Art course at Wirral Metropolitan College display the work on which they are judged for their degree, the only course in the UK that includes an exhibition in a public art gallery.
Other exhibitions are a selection from solo exhibitions by locally or nationally known artists, group exhibitions like the Wirral Society of Arts, who hold a show each year alternating between a Members-only exhibition and a National Open show, schools or young people’s projects, and displays drawn from the Wiliamson’s own collections.
In addition, events take place which link to exhibitions, like lectures or art workshops, and a series of concerts throughout the year, but especially the Friends of the Williamson’s programme of Sunday Serenades, held at 3pm each week from May to September at the Williamson Art Gallery, and during August at Birkenhead Priory.
