About Watchet Market House Museum

Watchet Market House Museum was founded in 1978 by a band of far sighted volunteers who persuaded the Watchet Town Council and the Orchard Wyndham Estate to allow the former market house to become a museum of Watchet's history. It has developed since then and is now visited by nearly 40,000 visitors every year.
The first curator was AL Wedlake who was an archaeologist and author of 'A History of Watchet' now sadly out of print. He was succeeded by Ben Norman, a local chronicler of the maritime traditions of the town. The third curator was Roger Wedlake, son of ALW. There are at present, two co-curators, Stephanie Franklin and Jim Nicholas.
The collections include locally found fossils, part of the renowned AL Wedlake collection of flint tools, samples from the Anglo Saxon Watchet mint, maritime artefacts, photos and models of the West Somerset Mineral Railway and exhibits telling Watchet's social history.
