The Leicester Royal Infirmary Museum is really two museums in one, a museum of the History of Medicine, and a museum of the History of the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Founded in 1990 by former Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Aubrey Stewart, and former Administrator the late Stanley Tipton, the museum builds upon Dr. Stewart's interest in the History of Medicine, and generous donations of equipment and artefacts from retiring hospital staff.
Exhibits in the museum range from an 1820 trephine set, bone saws, and a device for curing diverse ills by electric shock are on display. The museum also boasts a range of medicine bottles from the 18th and 19th century. These were colour coded as many patients couldn't read - green bottles held ointment, while blue bottles contained poison. Stoneware was used to hold toxic substances that were strong enough to dissolve glass.
