Here in 1760-67 the witty and eccentric parson, Laurence Sterne wrote Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey. Sometimes between writing he stepped out into his garden 'to weed, hack up old roots or wheel away rubbish'. The early 15th century house, added to by Sterne, is surrounded by 2 acres of garden, including a walled garden full of old fashioned roses and unusual cottage garden plants, and a wild garden in the adjoining disused quarry.
Shandy Hall houses the world's foremost collection of editions of Sterne's novels, plus an interesting background of contemporary prints and paintings illustrating his work. Its appeal therefore spans a broad range of interests, from the academic, the architectural and the horticultural.
Since 2005 'cinematic interests' can also be included as Shandy Hall was a location for the film 'Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story' starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon and Gillian Anderson.
